Delhi High Court takes up Kangana Ranaut and Vijay Deverakonda image-rights suits

The Delhi High Court issued summons to defendants in actor and lawmaker Kangana Ranaut’s suit over obscene and AI-generated material allegedly circulated online. The court is also considering a separate plea by actor Vijay Deverakonda over the unauthorised use of his identity.

Justice Vikas Mahajan said the court would consider Ranaut’s request for interim protection. Her counsel told the court that explicit images, fake news and AI-generated material falsely attributing statements to the actor had appeared online.

Ranaut’s lawyer said she was not seeking interim relief against memes and satirical posts, although she considered some of them objectionable. The court also heard that some defendants had removed material after receiving a copy of the suit.

In a separate case, Deverakonda is seeking protection against impersonation, false endorsements and commercial use of his identity without permission. His counsel also cited AI-generated posts and the sale of merchandise featuring elements associated with the actor’s persona.

The Hindu reported that several other public figures had previously approached the Delhi High Court with similar requests. Their cases sought protection for personal and publicity rights over names, images and other identifying traits.
