Thieves rob Buenos Aires apartment during Messi’s farewell match

Burglars broke into a home in the Palermo district while its residents were at the Monumental stadium. A security camera captured them forcing open the door and searching the rooms.

The robbery took place on Tuesday, Oct. 6, shortly before 6:30 p.m. As the city awaited Lionel Messi’s farewell match for Argentina against Benin, thieves entered an apartment on Humboldt Street near number 2,000. Investigators received footage from a camera installed in the living room.

The video shows men with their faces uncovered forcing the front door open and moving through the rooms in search of valuables. One of them was talking on the phone while searching the living room. Police are examining the footage to identify the suspects.

The residents discovered the theft after returning home and reported it to Neighborhood Police Station 14B. Federal criminal prosecutor Anselmo Castelli is handling the case, which is being investigated as a burglary committed while the occupants were away.

Facundo, the apartment’s tenant, said the thieves took savings, work materials and electronic devices. He estimated that they spent about three minutes inside. He said a locksmith told him the door had been pried open, even though it had been secure.

Facundo speculated that one suspect might be Chilean and another Mexican. He linked that theory to an attempt to use one of his cards for purchases in Chilean pesos. Police have not publicly confirmed the suspects’ nationalities or the reported card use.
