Klaipeda port chief says Belarus potash transit depends on EU decisions

Klaipeda port is technically ready to handle Belarusian potash, but resuming transit depends on political decisions, port authority chief Algis Latakas told Interfax on October 15.
Speaking at the New Silk Way forum, he linked any resumption to the European Union's position and geopolitical developments.
The EU Council has extended the Belarus sanctions regime until February 28, 2027. Latakas said Lithuania could not make a unilateral decision to restore the shipments.
Lithuania terminated its potash transit agreement with Belaruskali from February 1, 2022. Before the halt, Klaipeda handled about 10–11 million tonnes of Belarusian potash annually. Exports were subsequently redirected through Russian ports, with fertilisers also shipped to China by rail.
