The number of liquidations among Russian food-service businesses rose 15% from the same period last year, Kommersant reported, citing Kontur.Focus data. In July, 223,800 businesses in the sector remained active, down 7.8% year on year. It was the first decline in the measure since 2022.
The Federation of Restaurateurs and Hoteliers cited a heavier tax burden among the reasons for closures. Industry representatives also point to higher rents and weaker demand. Amid economic uncertainty, some consumers have increasingly chosen ready-made supermarket food over visits to cafes and restaurants.
Closures have affected both independent venues and businesses linked to large chains, market participants said. The figures count legal entities and sole proprietors liquidated during the period, rather than the number of individual locations that shut.
