Melbourne Airport opens new pick-up and drop-off hub

A covered bridge links the replacement transport zone to terminals, but passengers face longer walks.

Melbourne Airport has closed its terminal-front drop-off ramp, which had operated for more than 50 years, and opened new pick-up and drop-off areas at its T123 Transport Hub. A covered pedestrian bridge connects the hub with the terminals. The change took effect on Oct. 6 as part of the airport’s international terminal expansion.

Passengers departing from Terminals 1 to 3 now walk between 172 and 350 metres from the drop-off area. The route from arrivals to the pick-up zone is between 285 and 380 metres. The airport provides buggies and assistance for passengers with mobility needs. ABC reported that early users generally welcomed the new arrangement, though some needed help navigating it.

Pick-up and drop-off areas are on different parking levels. The first five minutes in the pick-up area are free. Drivers are then directed to another level, where they can wait for 15 more minutes before parking charges may apply. Private drivers now use the Naarm Way exit to reach the hub.
