Lviv recruitment officer detained in case over mobilised man’s death

Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation has served a notice of suspicion on an officer at a Lviv military recruitment centre over the beating of a mobilised man who died in hospital. A court ordered the officer held in custody without bail.

Investigators allege that in September 2026 he and other centre employees punched and kicked the man in the torso and chest. The victim was lying on the floor with his hands restrained behind his back and could not defend himself.

After the beating, the man was moved to a utility room, where an ambulance later collected him. Doctors found multiple rib fractures and severe lung injuries. They were unable to save him, the bureau said.

In August 2026, the same officer had been found guilty of accepting a bribe in collusion with others. The court imposed a sentence that did not involve imprisonment.

He is now suspected of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm resulting in death, committed by a group. The offence carries a potential prison term of up to ten years, according to the bureau.
