Magnitude 6.1 earthquake recorded near the northern Kurils

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the Pacific Ocean near the northern Kuril Islands overnight on October 7. It was felt in Severo-Kurilsk, the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station told RIA Novosti.

Station chief Elena Semenova said the epicentre was 149 kilometres east of the uninhabited island of Matua, with the focus 20 kilometres beneath the seabed. Shaking in Severo-Kurilsk reached an intensity of up to three points.

RIA Novosti reported that no tsunami warning was issued. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) recorded the same event at magnitude 5.9 and a depth of 26 kilometres; seismic agencies can report slightly different magnitudes.
