Martinez says anger after defeat drove criticism of United hierarchy

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez said anger and frustration after defeat by Atletico Madrid had driven his criticism of the club's hierarchy. In an October 14 statement, he also stressed the players' responsibility for results.
United lost 2-0 in Madrid a day earlier in the Champions League's second league-phase round. After the game, Martinez demanded more from the club's leadership over squad reinforcement and specifically mentioned director of football Jason Wilcox.
In his new message, Martinez linked his comments to his desire to compete for the biggest trophies. He said those high standards reflected his understanding of the responsibility of wearing the club's shirt.
Martinez added that players must first demand more from themselves. He expressed confidence in his teammates, head coach Michael Carrick and club staff, and called for continued collective work.
The Argentine defender has played for Manchester United since July 2022. He has won the League Cup and FA Cup with the team.
