Carp reports Moldovan notes to Ukraine over border guards' frontier crossing
Moldova sent notes to Ukrainian authorities after two Ukrainian border guards crossed the frontier while pursuing a man on the Dniester, parliamentary national security committee head Lilian Carp told Radio Moldova.
Carp called the crossing a serious violation. He said protest or information notes had been sent to Ukraine's embassy and other authorities.
The incident occurred on October 15. Ukrainian border service spokesman Andriy Demchenko said the man resisted detention and that shallow water and an engine malfunction carried the guards' boat to the Moldovan bank. The service opened an internal investigation.
TVR Moldova, citing Moldovan Border Police, reported that the 49-year-old man was hospitalized in Soroca with a concussion after being beaten during detention. He requested asylum in Moldova.
The guards had been handed back to Ukraine by October 18, Demchenko told Ukrainska Pravda. Moldova did not return the man they had pursued.
