Siliguri posters urging purchases from Hindu-owned shops spark dispute

A Hindu Jagaran Manch campaign in Siliguri has prompted political criticism ahead of Durga Puja. Its posters urge people to buy biryani and ritual items from Hindu-owned shops.

Campaign organiser Abhishek Das said the messages were an appeal to consumers, rather than a binding instruction. He argued that supporting these businesses would help the local economy.

Former minister and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Asok Bhattacharya demanded the removal of the posters and action against those responsible. He described the campaign as discriminatory. That is his assessment, rather than a finding that an offence has occurred.

A Bharatiya Janata Party representative said the party was not involved and described the organisation as independent. The Hindu and Times of India reported criticism from some residents.

Critics said a cook's religious identity traditionally did not determine food choices and noted that Muslim artisans also make festival decorations. The reports announce no ban on purchases, police decision or judicial finding concerning the posters.
