Nattika toll collection resumes on NH 66 despite protests

Toll collection resumed at Nattika on NH 66 on October 10 under heavy police security. Opponents demanded that highway construction be finished before motorists were charged, The Hindu and Times of India reported.
Charges were introduced on October 8 but collection was suspended following protests. The Hindu reported that it restarted after the state government approved the move and promised security for the plaza.
Police removed Social Democratic Party of India and Welfare Party activists who attempted to obstruct collection. Other political organisations and local groups also opposed charging motorists before construction was finished.
The National Highways Authority of India puts completion of the 62-kilometre stretch at around 90%. Protesters point to unfinished structures on the Kaprikkad–Kodungallur route, including the Chavakkad bypass, Vadannappally flyover, Chettuva bridge, Edamuttam underpass and Kottamkulam–C.V. Junction bridge.
They say work has not started on several recently approved pedestrian overbridges. The listed locations include Nattika, Valappad High School, Kaipamangalam–Sree Narayanapuram, Engandiyur, Pokkulangara, Manathala–Edakkazhiyur and Mandalamkunnu.
The Hindu reported that Haryana-based Skylark Group received the collection contract. Opponents want charges deferred, citing safety and access concerns for motorists and residents while structures and connecting works remain unfinished.
