The shooting occurred in Marble Hill at about 4 p.m. Thursday. New York police said their officers were not involved and were not at the scene.

The person was taken to a hospital, conscious and receiving medical care, the New York Police Department (NYPD) said. The Associated Press reported that the shooting happened in Marble Hill, a neighborhood in northern Manhattan.

Police said the incident involved federal law enforcement agents but did not identify their agency. The AP reported that an FBI evidence response team went to the scene to support partners at the Department of Homeland Security.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she had been briefed and called on federal authorities to provide a full and transparent account. Details of the shooting remained limited at the time of publication.

Pedro Almaraz, an employee at a nearby restaurant, told the Associated Press he heard three or four shots and saw a man on the ground surrounded by masked officers wearing Department of Homeland Security insignia.
