Police uncover mining operation linked to 5 million rouble loss in Kabardino-Balkaria

Police in Kabardino-Balkaria reported finding 20 cryptocurrency mining devices in premises beneath a shop in Kamenka. The interior ministry alleged that a Nalchik resident had bypassed electricity meters, causing a loss of about 5 million roubles.

RIA Novosti reported on October 8 that the man had rented the basement premises and installed the mining devices there. Police said the unmetered connection reduced the operation's electricity costs. Interfax also reported the equipment count and estimated loss.

A criminal case has been opened over alleged property damage on an especially large scale. The cited offence carries a maximum prison term of five years. The loss remains an official estimate, and the suspect's alleged activities are under investigation.

Cryptocurrency mining is subject to a complete ban in Kabardino-Balkaria. The restriction runs from January 1, 2025, to March 15, 2031, and applies to a total of 10 Russian regions.
