Rayo–Athletic match suspended after supporters throw objects onto pitch

The Spanish league match between Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Club was suspended on Saturday after a protest against Rayo president Raúl Martín Presa disrupted play.

Home supporters threw paper planes and small balls onto the pitch at Vallecas in Madrid. The protest was directed at the president’s management of the club, EFE reported.

Referee José María Sánchez Martínez interrupted play twice. During the second stoppage, the players left the pitch for the dressing rooms. The score remained 0:0 when the game was halted.

The fixture belonged to the eighth round of the Spanish championship. Attempts to resume it did not allow the teams to complete the match, and the referee ultimately suspended the encounter.

LaLiga said a new date and kick-off time would be announced later. The league condemned the repeated throwing of objects, saying it endangered safety and prevented the competition from proceeding normally.
