Rei Sakamoto defeats Andrey Rublev in Shanghai second round

Japan’s Rei Sakamoto beat Andrey Rublev in the second round of the ATP tournament in Shanghai on October 9, winning 6–4, 6–4.

The match lasted one hour and 22 minutes. Sakamoto took both sets by the same score to advance to the third round, while Rublev’s singles campaign ended.

Sakamoto was ranked 137th in the world at the time of the match, compared with Rublev’s 23rd. Beating the higher-ranked opponent allowed the Japanese player to continue in the Masters 1000 event.

Australia’s Alex de Minaur, ranked ninth, is listed as Sakamoto’s next opponent in the draw. Rublev will not appear in the third round of this edition. The contest was settled in two sets, with no deciding set required.
