Japan studies rapid rocket launches to replace lost satellites

Japan's Defense Ministry plans to study technologies for rapidly launching replacement satellites. The project aims to restore space capabilities more quickly after attacks or other emergencies.
Yomiuri, cited by RBC, reported that the ministry intends to recruit private companies for the study in October. Its focus is on producing small satellite launch vehicles quickly and at low cost.
Options include manufacturing components with 3D printing. Researchers will also examine component stockpiles, supply-chain security and ways to accelerate rocket assembly.
A shortage of conventional launch sites has prompted consideration of alternative launch methods. These include mobile launchers, sea-based platforms and aircraft.
The rockets would carry small satellites designed to become operational soon after reaching orbit. Faster launches and faster activation could together shorten the time needed to replace lost satellite functions. The proposal concerns research into those capabilities rather than deployment of a completed system.
