Rescued imperial eagle faces lengthy rehabilitation in Dagestan

An eastern imperial eagle rescued in Makhachkala has an injured wing. Rehabilitation centre staff say it is eating well, but treatment will take considerable time.

A falcon centre employee said one of the eagle's wings was completely broken. The bird has been placed in a large enclosure and is gradually adapting to its surroundings. Staff intend to continue caring for it and monitor its condition.

Residents earlier found the injured imperial eagle near a city hospital and took it to a local blogger and animal rescuer. Dagestan's environmental officials subsequently collected the bird and delivered it to the falcon centre within the reserve.

Regional media confirmed the transfer for rehabilitation, citing the environmental ministry. The eastern imperial eagle is listed in Russia's Red Data Book. The account gives no date for completing treatment, so the assessment that recovery will be lengthy remains preliminary. Staff report that the eagle has a good appetite, but that does not mean its injured wing has healed.
