Romanian court orders România TV to pay Crin Antonescu damages

A Bucharest court awarded the former presidential candidate 15,000 lei in damages and 2,600 lei in legal costs. The ruling can be appealed within 30 days.

The Bucharest Tribunal partially upheld a lawsuit brought by former Romanian presidential candidate Crin Antonescu against broadcaster România TV. It ordered RTV HD to pay him 15,000 lei, about 3,000 euros, in damages and 2,600 lei in legal costs. The ruling is not final and may be appealed within 30 days.

Antonescu sued after the broadcaster aired reports about him during the 2025 presidential campaign. Paginademedia reported that some broadcasts used headlines alleging corruption and links to the former Securitate security service. Those were the broadcaster’s claims, not findings of fact by the court.

Romania’s National Audiovisual Council had previously sanctioned România TV over its coverage of the election campaign. Antonescu denied the broadcaster’s accusations at the time, saying it had spread defamatory claims about him without evidence.
