The National Liberal Party (PNL) would support prime minister-designate Luca Niculescu’s government if it were made up of non-partisan specialists, lawmaker Alexandru Muraru said. He urged the Social Democrats to clarify whether they want to govern, back a technocratic cabinet or enter opposition.
Muraru outlined the PNL’s position during a Euronews interview on Wednesday. He said the party’s preferred option was a cabinet of specialists from different fields who do not hold party membership. He accused the Social Democratic Party (PSD) of wanting to govern “at any cost.”
The lawmaker said PSD had experience controlling and later bringing down a technocratic government, citing the cabinet of Dacian Cioloș as an example. Muraru called on the Social Democrats to state their position and the conditions under which they would offer support.
Prime minister-designate Luca Niculescu is due to meet parties from the former coalition on Thursday as he seeks backing for his cabinet. HotNews reported that PSD plans to present him with 10 economic recovery measures approved at a party meeting in Sinaia.
PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu said the party wants to know whether the designated prime minister is willing to move Romania away from policies it associates with Ilie Bolojan and the PNL-USR alliance. Niculescu needs 233 parliamentary votes to secure approval for his cabinet.
