New deposits of rubies, sapphires, emeralds and amber may be found in Russia in the coming years. Companies plan to spend 34.5 million rubles on exploration for these resources in 2026.
Exploration for corundum, which includes ruby and sapphire, is under way in Buryatia and the Komi Republic. Companies are looking for emerald-bearing material in Sverdlovsk Region and amber in Kaliningrad Region, the Natural Resources Ministry told RIA Novosti. The ministry expects the work to increase known reserves and lead to new discoveries in the coming years. Companies plan to spend 34.5 million rubles on exploration for these materials in 2026.
The ministry said deposits of these gemstones are rare in Russia and worldwide, so new discoveries are uncommon. No new deposits have been found and no growth in reserves at existing sites has been recorded so far in 2026, it said. Companies are continuing exploration. The 34.5 million rubles represent their planned spending on research this year.
