Russia proposes raising women's military service age limit to 50

Russia's government submitted a bill raising women's maximum military service age from 45 to 50. The proposed effective date is January 1, 2027, if the bill becomes law.
RIA Novosti reported that the bill also raises reserve age limits. For women officers, the limit would rise from 50 to 55. For women with other military ranks, it would increase from 45 to 50.
The explanatory memorandum links the proposal to completing service required for pension and housing entitlements. Women entering contract service at ages 25–30 in areas without preferential service calculations may reach the current limit before qualifying, its authors said.
The memorandum also highlights women's role in medical support for units involved in combat. Its authors say women constitute most of the personnel deployed from medical units, including skilled specialists who have reached the age limit.
The bill would amend Articles 49 and 53 of the law on military duty and military service. Changes would apply upon entry into force, with existing contracts remaining valid. The proposed start date allows time to amend service regulations. Submission of the bill does not mean it has become law.
