A 37-year-old Russian man died after striking a cliff while paragliding near the Lycian Way in Fethiye. Two years earlier, he had suffered a sprain during a similar flight in nearby Ölüdeniz.
The Russian Consulate General in Antalya said the man died on Wednesday while paragliding. Turkish media identified him as Alexander and reported that he had launched alone from Mount Babadağ at an altitude of about 1,900 meters. Russian diplomats told RIA Novosti that the consulate was in contact with Turkish authorities and helping prepare documents to repatriate his body.
In October 2024, Alexander posted a video of another flight in Ölüdeniz, which is administratively part of Fethiye. In the caption, he said he had suffered a sprain despite following the rules, using good equipment, training with professional instructors and flying in good weather. He was able to land on the beach. A designated paved landing strip is set aside there for paragliders.
The man posted photos and videos of skydiving, paragliding, sport motorcycles and racing cars. He also practiced speed flying, a fast descent along a mountain slope using a small canopy. One video showed him skydiving with his young son.
