Aradhana Mishra takes charge of Uttar Pradesh Congress amid party clash

Aradhana Mishra, known as Mona, took charge of the Indian National Congress in Uttar Pradesh on October 11. A dispute involving supporters of the incoming and outgoing leaders disrupted the ceremony in Lucknow.

The Times of India reported that the argument began near the party headquarters' entrance when Ajay Rai's supporters asked people to clear a passage for him. Citing party workers, it said the confrontation escalated into a scuffle in which shoes were allegedly used. Women from the party offered a different account, saying they had gathered to welcome both leaders but faced rude demands to move.

PTI also reported a confrontation, although it could not establish the precise trigger. One party worker interviewed by the agency denied reports of blows and thrown footwear. Rai threatened to leave but stayed after senior colleagues intervened and handed over charge to Mishra.

MP Imran Masood said Rai left the headquarters after completing the handover. The outgoing leader was absent from Mishra's first press conference in her new role. She identified strengthening the party organisation and preparing for the state's 2027 assembly elections as her main priorities.
