The Federal Penitentiary Service in Stavropol region extended mourning at its facilities through Oct. 11 after a second guard wounded in an attack by a prisoner on a Vladikavkaz–Adler train died.

The attack took place on Oct. 2 while prisoners were being transferred. The regional penitentiary service said one guard was killed at the scene and the attacker was shot dead by return fire. A second officer died in hospital five days later. Two other injured officers remain in hospitals in Kabardino-Balkaria, where their condition is described as stable.

The service had initially declared three days of mourning, from Oct. 5 to 7. Flags at its facilities will now remain at half-mast through Oct. 11, and cultural events have been cancelled. The agency expressed condolences to the dead officer’s family.
