The blast struck the San Antonio area of Pakuwon City. Authorities were investigating its cause.
Five people were injured in an explosion on the morning of Oct. 6 in the San Antonio commercial area of Pakuwon City in Surabaya, East Java. Antara reported that at least 20 buildings and several nearby vehicles were damaged.
A city disaster-management official said the injured were taken to hospitals. Four were initially brought to Haji Surabaya Hospital and one to Mitra Keluarga Kenjeran. The city command center later said they had been transferred to Dr. Soetomo Hospital for further treatment.
The explosion was reported at about 7:11 a.m. local time on Kalisari Utara I Street in the Mulyorejo district. Damage to nearby buildings ranged from light to severe. Emergency officials and police cordoned off the site, inspected the area and assessed the damage.
Antara said the cause had not been officially established at the time of its report. An earlier report by public broadcaster RRI, citing the local police chief, identified a leaking liquefied-petroleum-gas hose as a possible cause. The investigation was continuing.
