TGSRTC workers complete union recognition polling

Telangana State Road Transport Corporation workers completed union recognition polling on October 9. Official results are scheduled for October 17, according to The Hindu and other Indian news outlets.

Employees voted at polling stations across Telangana. Union leaders reported slower participation in the morning and greater activity later in the day. The Hindu reported that polling concluded peacefully.

The previous union recognition elections took place on July 19, 2016, when the Telangana Mazdoor Union secured recognition. Before this year's vote, the returning officer sent notices to 46 trade unions requesting the necessary records.

Around 12 unions contested, organising themselves into blocs. Alliances centred on the Employees Union and the Telangana Workers Union were prominent contenders. The results will determine employee representation at state and regional levels.

The Hindu listed 13,797 eligible workers in the Greater Hyderabad zone: 5,109 drivers, 6,509 conductors, 1,476 garage staff and 703 in other categories. Postal voting on October 14 and 15 is available for employees working on long-distance services, according to the Times of India and New Indian Express.

Unions campaigned on service conditions and employee welfare. Before polling, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar also discussed compassionate appointments for workers' relatives and the reinstatement of dismissed employees. Official election results remain pending.
