Peskov says diplomats must find a path toward a Ukraine settlement

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Oct. 8 that diplomats should find a way to move toward a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. He reiterated Moscow’s stated readiness for talks and said he saw no reciprocal willingness from Kyiv.

“The art of diplomacy is precisely to find some kind of opening that will make it possible to move onto a peaceful track,” Peskov told reporters in Turkmenbashi on Oct. 8 as he discussed a settlement in Ukraine.

Earlier, President Vladimir Putin said Russia would like to end the fighting in Ukraine as soon as possible through a peaceful settlement. Putin said Moscow was ready for negotiations but, in his assessment, did not see a willingness to engage from Ukrainian authorities.

In a separate comment to Anadolu Agency the same day, Peskov said a settlement should be comprehensive and take account of future generations. That broader remark is consistent with the diplomatic framing in the RIA Novosti report, but does not indicate that the parties have agreed on a path forward.
