Karnataka university to host workshop on Kannada literary criticism

The Central University of Karnataka and Karnataka Sahitya Akademi will hold a three-day workshop from Oct. 7 to 9, featuring 10 sessions on Kannada criticism and its theoretical foundations.

A three-day workshop titled “Theorisation of Kannada Criticism” will be held from Oct. 7 to 9 at the Kannada Department of the Central University of Karnataka (CUK). The university department and the Karnataka Sahitya Akademi in Bengaluru are jointly organising it under the Department of Kannada and Culture. The programme lists 10 sessions of discussions and paper presentations on Kannada literary criticism and its theoretical foundations. The opening is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Karnataka Sahitya Akademi president L.N. Mukundaraj will inaugurate the workshop. CUK Vice-Chancellor Battu Satyanarayana is the chief guest, and Ganesh Pawar, dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Languages, will attend. Speakers include Basavaraj M. Kodagunti, director of the Central Institute of Indian Languages in Mysuru, and Ramalingappa T. Begur, principal of Government First Grade College in Hoskote. Akademi member-convener Siddarama Honkal will give the introductory remarks; Shivaganga Ramma, head of CUK’s Kannada Department, will preside.

The agenda includes translated works in Kannada, approaches to pre-modern literature, Jain literature, Vachana and Shaiva criticism, Kannada poetics, selected forewords and afterwords, folk and comparative literature, feminist and Dalit criticism, inscriptional studies, Keerthana and Vaishnava criticism, Kannada literary history and Tattvapada criticism. Participants will also discuss how writings on philosophical concepts and theories can be reviewed and theorised.

Senior writers, scholars, professors and subject experts from across Karnataka are expected to participate in person and online. The source says the valedictory programme will take place in October at 4 p.m., but does not specify the day. Former Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women’s University Vice-Chancellor Sabiha Bhumigowda is due to deliver the valedictory address. Akademi president L.N. Mukundaraj and Registrar Kariyappa N. will attend; CUK Registrar R.R. Biradar and Ganesh Pawar are listed as chief guests. Ramma will preside. Students, researchers, faculty and literature enthusiasts from universities and colleges across Karnataka are expected to join.
