Three people were killed and 36 injured in attacks on airports in Abha and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said. Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed responsibility for the strikes, according to the authority’s statement.
Two women, one Moroccan and one Algerian, were killed in the attack on Abha International Airport. Another 28 people were injured, the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation said.
A separate strike on King Khalid International Airport in the capital killed a Sudanese citizen and injured eight other people, including five Saudi citizens. The attacks took place on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The aviation authority said it was coordinating with security agencies to assess the damage and take measures to protect passengers and staff. The strikes came as fighting intensified in Yemen between the Houthis and forces backed by Saudi Arabia.
On September 18, the Saudi-led coalition said it had intercepted and destroyed a suspected Houthi ballistic missile fired toward Riyadh airport from Yemen. At least one explosion was heard near the airport the following day, and a plume of black smoke rose from a fuel storage area. The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh issued another security alert, urging Americans in Saudi Arabia to remain vigilant.
