Three years of war in Gaza: Ministry reports more than 74,000 killed

On the third anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023 attack, Gaza authorities reported more than 74,000 people killed and over 175,000 wounded during the war.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says the death toll had exceeded 74,000 by October, including at least 21,000 children. The ministry counts people brought to hospitals or whose deaths were officially registered. Thousands who remain missing or under rubble are not included. The Associated Press has reported that the ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants, while international organizations generally consider its records reliable.

The ministry has also reported more than 175,000 injured. The World Health Organization estimates that about 43,000 people suffered potentially life-changing injuries requiring long-term rehabilitation. The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said 91% of assessed households faced moderate-to-high water insecurity.

Al Jazeera calculated that attacks were recorded on 325 of the 361 days after the ceasefire took effect in October 2025. Its report cited Gaza Health Ministry figures of 1,460 people killed and 5,116 wounded over that period. Those totals reflect local authorities’ data and the outlet’s calculation, rather than an independent count of every incident.
