Three years of war leave much of Gaza displaced amid widespread destruction

More than one in 10 people from Gaza’s prewar population have been killed or wounded by Israeli fire since October 2023, according to Associated Press. Most residents still lack permanent shelter.

Over three years of war, people in Gaza have repeatedly fled their homes because of fighting and evacuation orders. Many families are mourning relatives or caring for people injured. Almost the entire population has been left homeless, and tent camps now cover beaches, former farmland and vacant lots.

The 2025 ceasefire agreement halted large-scale offensives and the heaviest bombardment, Associated Press reported. Strikes have continued, including attacks on tents, cars and buildings that have killed women, children and other family members.

Large-scale reconstruction has not begun. Israel continues to restrict the entry of most construction materials, while the reconstruction plan remains stalled amid the lack of agreement between Israel and Hamas on the group’s disarmament and the withdrawal of Israeli forces.

The estimate of people killed or wounded cited in the report is attributed to Associated Press. The agency also notes that prospects for rebuilding depend on implementation of the ceasefire terms and agreement on Gaza’s postwar arrangements.
