The AFA disciplinary tribunal handed one-match suspensions to Agustín Sandez and Fabricio Iacovich after a brawl in the final.
The sanctions are the first rulings over the incident at the Sept. 26 Supercopa Internacional final between Rosario Central and Estudiantes in Santiago del Estero. Rosario Central won 3-1.
The tribunal will continue investigating Estudiantes officials Juan Sebastián Verón, Marcos Angeleri and Pascual Caiella. It gave the club five days to expand its response and requested complete audiovisual records of the match and events after the final whistle from Torneos. AFA bulletin No. 6958, published Oct. 8, says the case involving the officials remains open.
Referee Darío Herrera’s report said defender Sandez made offensive gestures after the match and exchanged punches with an opponent. The same report said Estudiantes goalkeeper Iacovich struck an opponent with punches and kicks. Both players were sent off during the brawl and will miss one match.
The final also featured controversy over a VAR decision. Alexis Castro put Estudiantes ahead. Ángel Di María then equalized with a free kick and scored a penalty awarded after a video review. Julián Fernández made it 3-1 late in the game, and a brawl followed.
The tribunal has not ruled on Verón, Angeleri or Caiella. It is awaiting the club’s expanded response and the video records requested from Torneos.
