Forlán’s side scored five times after halftime in Kolkata and finished the friendly series with two wins.
Uruguay beat India 6-1 in Kolkata to close an Asian tour that marked Diego Forlán’s first stint in charge as interim coach. Tuesday’s match was halted for about half an hour because of a thunderstorm.
Darwin Núñez opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 11th minute, but Anirudh Thapa equalised in the 22nd. After the weather delay, Uruguay took control: Maximiliano Araújo scored in the 28th and 59th minutes, Rodrigo Zalazar in the 53rd, Juan Manuel Sanabria in the 71st and Rodrigo Aguirre in the 86th.
The game was the international debut of 30-year-old goalkeeper Thiago Cardozo. La Nación noted that an error by Cardozo led to India’s goal, but it did not prevent Uruguay from securing a convincing win. India had earlier lost 4-0 to Brazil during the tour.
Forlán said he was pleased with the three matches. Uruguay lost 3-1 to Japan before beating South Korea 4-1 and India 6-1. The coach praised the team’s pressing and transitions between defence and attack, and thanked the players for their willingness to work together.
Aguirre, who scored the sixth goal, said the heat and the pitch made the opening difficult for Uruguay, but the match became easier once the goals began. Uruguay are expected to play friendlies in FIFA’s November window; opponents have not yet been announced. La Nación reported that Forlán is guaranteed to remain in charge until March 2027, when the federation’s leadership will decide whether to confirm him permanently.
