The United States won all four autumn friendlies, giving Mauricio Pochettino a chance to test a new generation. Julian Hall and Justin Ellis stood out.
The Americans beat Peru 4-1, Chile 4-2, Mexico 3-0 and Canada 1-0 in September and October. Thirteen players made their senior national-team debuts, with an average age of 19. U.S. Soccer also said 13 uncapped players were included in the autumn squad.
Julian Hall, 18, scored three goals and added an assist in his first four appearances for the national team. He averaged 52.25 minutes per game. The goals ended a 12-match scoring drought. He scored and assisted against Chile, then added a goal against Peru.
Seventeen-year-old Cavan Sullivan scored against Mexico and averaged 33.5 minutes per appearance. Ellis scored twice during the run but was substituted at halftime against Canada after a knock to the leg. Midfielder Brooklyn Raines, 21, averaged 43 minutes per game and could be considered as a backup defensive midfielder behind Tyler Adams.
Goalkeepers Diego Kochen and Brian Schwake each played 135 minutes. World Cup players Matt Freese and Chris Brady saw less time.
The United States will face Haiti in the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals in November. Pochettino is expected to call up a full-strength squad. Gio Reyna, 24, of Strasbourg emerged as a leader and mentor to the younger players. He has made eight consecutive club and international starts for the first time in his career.
