White Flower charity fair opens in Arkhangelsk

The White Flower charity fair opened at Arkhangelsk's Gostiny Dvory historical complex on October 16. Proceeds are intended to support families of people taking part in the war, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.

The fair features items made by children and craftspeople from the Arkhangelsk region. It runs on October 16 and 17, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

At the opening, Anna Gromova, chair of the supervisory board of the Elisaveta-Sergei Educational Society foundation, recalled that a similar campaign had taken place in the region 115 years earlier. She said it had raised 5,888 roubles to help tuberculosis sanatoriums run by the local Red Cross community.

The original White Flower campaigns were held between 1911 and 1916 to support tuberculosis patients and families of First World War participants. The foundation has been involved in reviving the tradition since 2015.
