An experimental build replaces window thumbnails with a compact list of titles. Microsoft has not announced when the feature might be released to all users.
Windows 11 normally shows thumbnails of open windows when a user hovers over an app icon. In the test mode, the previews are replaced by a list of window titles, making it easier to select a window without scanning its image. 9to5Windows reported the discovery, and Windows Latest demonstrated the feature in an Experimental Windows Insider build.
Windows XP used a similar list when several windows from one program were grouped under a single taskbar button. In Windows 7, a list could appear automatically when thumbnails no longer fit on screen. Reports say Windows 11 users would be able to choose the list instead of thumbnails in taskbar settings.
The test builds also contain a Quick Settings tile for a linked Android phone. It would let users adjust the phone’s ringtone volume or make the device play a sound if it is misplaced. Both features remain in testing, and Microsoft has not announced a general release date.
The report also said Microsoft was considering bringing Pinball from Windows XP to Windows 11. The company has not announced release dates for the window list, phone controls or the game.
