IOM reports 109 deaths in migrant boat disaster off Djibouti
At least 109 migrants, including 15 children, died when a boat capsized off Djibouti, the International Organization for Migration said on October 11. Another 116 people remained missing.
Survivors said the vessel overturned north of Obock during the night of October 8–9. It was travelling from Djibouti to Yemen and was estimated to be carrying about 350 people.
IOM staff are working alongside local authorities to provide emergency assistance. DW, reporting information from international news agencies, said at least 80 Ethiopians survived the disaster.
The agency appealed to donors and partners for additional support for Djibouti, including search and rescue operations and urgent assistance for those affected.
