Avianca flight diverts to Miami after severe turbulence

Avianca reported that six passengers and three crew members were affected by turbulence on a flight from Medellín to New York. The aircraft diverted to Miami.
Flight 042 was heading to John F. Kennedy International Airport when it encountered severe turbulence. The Airbus A320 landed safely at Miami International Airport at around 3:30 a.m. local time on October 9.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported that 8 people were taken to medical facilities after landing. One patient went to a trauma centre with serious injuries, while seven others were transported to local hospitals. The rescue service's total differs from the airline's account, which identified nine people affected.
ABC News reported that Avianca staff and airport medical services arranged assistance when the aircraft arrived. The airline said passengers who were not injured continued to New York on Friday morning.
By Friday evening, Jackson Memorial Hospital told CBS Miami that seven patients in its care had been discharged. The eighth patient's status remained unknown.
