Anthropic plans to commit 5% of shares to public benefit fund
Anthropic announced plans to commit 5% of its shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. The allocation is subject to stockholder approval, the company said.
The new fund could make large donations to nonprofit organisations or distribute money directly to specific populations. Anthropic is exploring those options and has not announced particular recipients.
A potential focus is AI’s effect on employment. The company previously committed $200 million to studying and addressing labor-market disruption.
Anthropic’s co-founders pledged to donate 80% of their equity holdings. About half of employees participate in a program in which the company matches their equity donations.
Together with the new commitment, roughly 20% of Anthropic shares would be dedicated to public benefit. The fund’s stake could increase further as the company’s valuation grows.
Anthropic plans to disclose more about the fund’s structure and governance in the coming months.
