Counting in the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election in Assam began at 8 a.m. on Friday, October 9. Provisional figures published by the Election Commission of India show BJP candidate Devasish Sharma in the lead. The commission says final constituency data will be issued in Form 20.
Votes are being counted at Dawson Higher Secondary School and Government Boys' School in Nagaon, with 14 tables at each centre. The district administration has required candidates and political parties to obtain permission before holding any procession.
Fifteen candidates contested the by-election. Turnout on October 6 was 76.19%. The seat became vacant after Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned and earlier this year won an Assembly election from Dispur as a BJP candidate. The result will not alter the balance of power in Parliament.
