Azerbaijan targets 15 million tonnes on each of two transit routes

Azerbaijan aims to increase freight passing through its territory on the East–West and North–South corridors to 15 million tonnes in each direction, President Ilham Aliyev said at the CIS summit in Turkmenistan on 9 October.
Transit shipments through Azerbaijan rose by 10% in the first half of 2026 to almost 8 million tonnes, according to Aliyev. He described the higher freight volumes as a medium-term goal without specifying a deadline.
Aliyev linked the expansion of transit traffic to Azerbaijan’s growing role as a regional transport hub. He identified the East–West and North–South corridors as key international routes on which the country facilitates freight movements.
The meeting of CIS heads of state took place in the Avaza tourist zone near Turkmenbashi. Its agenda included cooperation marking the Commonwealth’s 35th anniversary, cultural and humanitarian ties, and foreign-policy coordination.
