CIS leaders adopt statement on preserving historical memory

CIS heads of state signed a statement on preserving historical memory in Turkmenistan on 9 October. It calls for broader history education and cooperation among researchers, the Commonwealth’s Executive Committee said.
The summit participants urged the international community to work together to preserve historical memory and strengthen peace and trust between peoples. They also opposed the glorification of Nazism, fascism and other destructive ideologies.
The statement presents historical knowledge as a means of countering discrimination, racism, xenophobia and intolerance. It says interpretations of history should rest on careful study of sources and scholarly works.
Areas of cooperation include protecting monuments, promoting commemorative dates and organising joint specialist events. The countries intend to expand contacts among scholars, archivists, archaeologists, search organisations, youth groups and volunteers.
The document also envisages cooperation through the International Association of Historians and Archivists of CIS member states and joint initiatives at international forums. It was signed at the summit in the Avaza tourist zone.
