Bangladeshi university students discuss Tagore’s ‘The Postmaster’

Students from the Bondhushava club at Jahangirnagar University held a reading discussion of Rabindranath Tagore’s short story “The Postmaster.” The meeting took place on Sept. 24 at the university’s student-teacher center.

Participants discussed the characters’ loneliness, social distance and shifting relationship between the postmaster and Ratan. Organizers also focused on the ending’s note of regret, when the postmaster briefly considers returning.

Main speaker Aritra Guha, the club’s office secretary, analyzed the characters and their psychological tensions. Club president Syed Salman Hasan connected the story to the way friendships and close relationships can fade as life circumstances change.

During an open discussion, students considered Ratan’s selfless care for the postmaster, her view of him as a guardian and refuge, and the effect of social differences on relationships. Participants included club organizer Sifat Arifin, assistant organizer Arupa Rahman and students from several departments.
