Brazilian federal police chiefs met with Supreme Court justice

Federal Police director Andrei Rodrigues and two senior officials met with Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Tuesday, October 6. Folha de S.Paulo and other Brazilian outlets reported that the meeting was not listed on official calendars and its subject was not disclosed.

Intelligence director Leandro Almada and Dennis Cali, who heads the department investigating and combating organized crime, also attended the meeting in Moraes’s office. Neither the Supreme Court nor the police disclosed why it was held.

The meeting came amid an internal crisis at the court and after Brazil’s first round of elections. A dispute had arisen over a police report that was used to support a request for an investigation into Justice André Mendonça. The request was prompted by a decision from Moraes.

Rodrigues had defended the report as lawful, saying the police acted within their legal duties and in compliance with court orders. He also denied that the agency had monitored officials with legal immunity, as Mendonça had alleged.
