Bia Kicis, a senator-elect from Brazil’s Federal District, backed judicial reform that could include impeachment proceedings against Supreme Federal Court justices, especially Alexandre de Moraes. In an interview with CNN Brasil, she also said Flávio Bolsonaro should appoint women to the court if he becomes president.
Kicis said she supports term limits for justices, arguing that some can remain in office for decades and accumulate too much power. She also said some members of the court do not consider themselves accountable to the public or the constitution.
On appointments, she called for greater representation of women and said nominees should be committed to Brazil’s constitutional values. She linked those values to Christian beliefs and the views of Brazilian society. Her comments came amid political debate over the Supreme Federal Court and Moraes.
Kicis was elected to the Senate for the Federal District on Oct. 4, receiving 27.4% of the vote, according to Agência Senado. Her party, the Liberal Party, won 121 of the 513 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, the largest bloc. A presidential runoff between Flávio Bolsonaro and incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is scheduled for Oct. 25.
Kicis said she would campaign with Senator Michelle Bolsonaro for Flávio Bolsonaro and Celina Leão, who is seeking the Federal District governorship. She also said the opposition wants to secure the Senate presidency and named Senator Rogério Marinho as a possible candidate.
