Brazil's top electoral court asks police to investigate threats against staff

Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) has asked federal police to investigate online attacks against electoral officials. The court said social media carried about 30,000 posts involving threats and other abuses.

The court also asked prosecutors to seek the removal of the posts and hold their authors accountable. It said it would notify the X and Meta platforms about the increase in irregular messages.

The TSE said that by early afternoon on October 8 it had recorded about 30,000 posts containing disinformation, improper exposure of personal information, hate speech and veiled threats. Some of the threats, the court said, were directed at employees' family members.

In its statement, the court said unfounded attacks on the electronic voting system and threats against federal public servants could constitute criminal offences. The TSE added that staff and their families had been given increased security and psychological support.
