Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered former lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro to begin serving a four-year, two-month sentence and directed that his passports be canceled.
The conviction for continued coercion in a legal proceeding carries an initial semi-open regime. The court also imposed 50 day-fines, each worth two minimum wages, totaling 162,000 reais. Bolsonaro’s political rights are suspended for the duration of the sentence.
The Supreme Court’s First Panel convicted him on June 16. The court said the former lawmaker used his contacts in the United States to pressure justices and interfere in proceedings over the alleged coup attempt after the 2022 election, including the case against his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Eduardo Bolsonaro has lived in the United States since early 2025. He received a U.S. green card in July after previously residing there under temporary authorization. His defense disputes that his conduct amounted to coercion. The Federal Public Defender’s Office said he had no power to impose sanctions on Brazil or the justices and was engaged in political contacts and protected speech about the cases related to Jan. 8.
