Yvonne Weldon identifies herself as complainant in Mick Mundine case

Sydney councillor Yvonne Weldon has publicly confirmed that she is the complainant in the case against Mick Mundine. Police allege historical sexual assaults occurred in Redfern in June 1986.
Mundine, 79, was arrested on Thursday and charged with two offences, including sexual assault on a child. Weldon was 15 at the time of the alleged events. His lawyer Fahim Arya said Mundine would fight the charges.
In an Instagram post, Weldon said she was speaking publicly to help break the silence around abuse and support other survivors. An independent councillor, she became the City of Sydney's first Aboriginal councillor in 2021.
A strike force was established in December 2025 to investigate the allegations. Mundine was questioned for several hours at Newtown Police Station before receiving police bail. He is due at Downing Centre Local Court next Wednesday.
Mundine has served as chief executive of the Aboriginal Housing Company for most of its 50-year history. The organisation did not answer questions about whether he would remain in the role. He has also held directorships at the Aboriginal Medical Service and the Redfern Aboriginal Corporation. The report contains no court finding of guilt.
