The National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires is presenting “Inhabiting the Extreme: An Architectural Biography of Antarctica.” The exhibition is part of the 20th Buenos Aires International Architecture Biennial, which is taking place at venues across the city, and is open through October 18, the museum says.
The exhibition was developed by 6044 SUR, an interdisciplinary research collective focused on Antarctic architecture and living conditions. Its members include Argentine researchers Violeta and Victoria Nuviala Antelo. La Nación says the project brings together 150 architectural works from 25 countries with a presence on the continent.
Photographs, plans, videos and models trace the construction of Antarctic bases. The display includes experimental prototypes, postwar projects, reinterpretations of the International Style and Soviet brutalism. 6044 SUR presents Antarctica as an inhabited and historically contested territory, rather than an empty space.
The museum’s official description confirms that the exhibition explores the continent’s architectural history and will remain open until October 18. The works show how buildings and design solutions support life in one of Earth’s harshest climates.
