Warsaw court remands soldier suspected of espionage for three months

A Warsaw military garrison court remanded a 31-year-old soldier suspected of espionage in custody for three months on October 19. He holds Polish and Ukrainian citizenship.

Military police said he was detained in Lodz on October 16. He was attending the Military Medical Academy and held the rank of reserve private.

Deputy National Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk said the detainee had been collecting information about armed forces facilities. Tomczyk said the man had obtained Polish citizenship recently.

Rzeczpospolita reported that several mobile phones, documents, official seals, cash and gold were found in his possession. The newspaper presented those details in connection with the investigation.

Tomczyk said suspected espionage falls within the Military Counterintelligence Service’s remit. It contacts Ukrainian authorities if necessary.
